3-Day Cycling Tour Itinerary: From the Inland Vineyards to the Mouth of the Isonzo River

This easy and scenic cycling tour takes you through the historic region between Aquileia and Grado. The route passes through inland vineyards, medieval villages, Roman ruins, peaceful canals, and stunning coastal landscapes before reaching the Adriatic Sea.

Day 1: Strassoldo, Palmanova, and Aquileia

Your journey begins in Strassoldo, a small and beautifully preserved medieval village.

From here, cycle to Palmanova, a remarkable 16th-century fortress city built in the shape of a nine-pointed star. For more than two centuries, Palmanova has been regarded as one of the finest fortress cities in Europe.

Continue to Aquileia, an ancient Roman city famous for its impressive archaeological site and the magnificent Basilica of Aquileia, which features spectacular early Christian mosaics and a towering bell tower.

After exploring Aquileia, proceed to Grado for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Grado, the Isonzo River Nature Reserve, and Cavanata Valley

Spend the day discovering Grado, known as the "Golden Island." This charming seaside town is characterized by Venetian-style architecture and surrounded by a maze of picturesque islets.

Visit the early Christian cathedral and the ancient octagonal baptistery, two architectural gems of great historical significance.

Cycle along small streams and canals through flat landscapes of vineyards and cultivated fields to the Mouth of the Isonzo River Nature Reserve.

From there, follow a scenic bike path along the coast to the Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve, once used as a fishing lagoon and now a paradise for birdwatchers, with numerous aquatic species nesting near the sandy beaches.

Return to Grado for the night.

Day 3: Grado Pineta, Clauiano Wine Tasting, and Return to Strassoldo - Departure

Cross the Primo Canal and continue along the bike path from Grado Pineta to the historic center of Grado.

Ride inland through the DOC vineyards to the medieval village of Clauiano.

Here, enjoy a memorable wine tasting at Foffani Winery. In its elegant and welcoming atmosphere, you will sample award-winning Sauvignon and Merlot Bianco wines beside a flower-filled garden and rustic barn. Missoni tablecloths and a piano add a distinctive touch to this charming setting.

After the tasting, cycle back to Strassoldo, where the tour concludes.
